Fish #33 – First date with Silvio, 32, banker
I just came back from vacationing in Puerto Rico when Steven asked me out to dinner after seeing pictures of my vacation on Facebook. I’ve never met Steven before and he’s the only friend on my Facebook that I don’t actually know. He added me as a friend two years ago after recognizing that we had a mutual friend. We made some small talk in the past and I learned that he has a 1 year old son and he was born in Puerto Rico. Now we started making small talk about Puerto Rico since he was recently there visiting his parents and sister. Next came, “So Autumn, what do you say to dinner at my favorite Puerto Rican restaurant this Friday night. It’s a real taste of Puerto Rico.” This was Steven’s 3rd time asking me out, and I couldn’t turn him down once again, so I agreed to dinner. I tried not to go in with any expectations. After all, I barely knew anything about him anyway.
Steven offered to pick me up, but I declined the offer nicely and met him at the restaurant. I walked inside and saw him standing by the front desk. I smiled and gave him a peck on the check. He looked like his pictures on Facebook, although I haven’t really looked at them recently. He had a great physique—even better than I expected, actually. He was tall with dark features and had a glowing complexion. He wore a fitted t-shirt exposing the outline of his muscular chest. Needless to say, I found him attractive. Let’s hope the conversation followed suit.
Maybe I was nervous, but I talked a lot throughout the night. I was asking questions and then blabbing and just trying to fill the silence. Steven revealed that he manages several banks, lives with his younger brother while his parents and sister reside in Puerto Rico, and had limited childhood memories of his parents since he went to boarding school as a child. When I queried more about the reason for attending boarding school, he replied, “Long story.” But he did tell me that the only thing he hated about boarding school was the required suit-and-tie dress code and strict policies. We talked about my traditional, old-fashioned parents, and to my surprise—he had those same traditional values. He said, “No wonder you turned out so great!” I flashed him a smile and blushed. We talked about our careers and he seemed fascinated by my career in the medical field and genuinely expressed his interest in learning more. We shared many things in common—at least more things than I anticipated.
Steven talked briefly about his son stating that he was no longer with the child’s mother. Obviously. He admitted that he did not plan to have a child and that his mother was upset when she learned that his then-girlfriend was pregnant. Steven said that he does see his son often and has a good relationship with him. Although I never wanted to date a guy who had kids, that’s no longer a deal breaker for me—well, it depends on the circumstances and the guy, of course.
The dinner and conversation went well. The date lasted about two hours altogether. I thanked Steven for taking me out and for choosing such a wonderful, authentic Puerto Rican venue. There was a live band and a small dance floor where couples were grooving to some lively salsa beats. Now it was time to say goodbye. He walked me to my car and I gave him a hug. He asked if we could do this again, and I smiled and nodded, “I would love to.” I’m not sure if I meant that wholeheartedly, but I wouldn’t mind seeing him again.
Update: The very next day I received a phone call from Steven. We talked for about half an hour and he asked me out to the movie theater for that same day. I wasn’t available since I had a lot on my agenda, but I told him that maybe we can go some other day during the week instead. I don’t know if he took this as a sign that I wasn’t interested, but he hasn’t asked me out since. He did send me a quick message on Facebook joking about his short-lived diet, but he never responded to my reply. I haven’t heard from him since.
